Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Arjun Singh, laid the foundation stone of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Ropar (Punjab) today. On this occasion, the HRD Minister said, IITs are our national pride and owe their existence to the scientific temper and disposition of our first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Making India the knowledge hub of the world was a cherished dream of Pt. Nehru.

The first session of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), which will be set up in Himachal Pradeshs Mandi district, will start this year, Minister of State for External Affairs and Information and Broadcasting Anand Sharma said on Tuesday.

IIT Joint Entrance Board have decided on implementing OBC Reservation in the existing IIT institutions of about 9% in 2008 with a target of achieving 27% by 2010. The Board consisted of seven IIT institutions, Ministry of HRD, and other key institution representatives.

NO IIT FEE HIKE TILL HEFC IS SETUP
The centre has put IIT fee hike on hold.HRD minister Kapil Sibal has said that the proposal will have to wait until government sets up Higher Education Finance corporation to enable students who are not financially able.Meanwhile ministry has asked IIT to suggest reforms in entrance exams,external linkages of institutes and quality of research. Mr Sibal asked IIT kharagpur Director to study JEE and GAIT exam and suggest improvement. At present B.Tech students pays Rs. 50000 /year as fee which is proposed to hike upto 4 lakhs per annum over 10 years. The minister asked each IIT to indicate in four week which area to achieve the highest standards by 2020.Also they have to give a roadmap for compensation that will attract the best faculty from India and abroad and also suggest infrastructure development plan.
